America needed to laugh after the fuel crisis, the Carter presidency and the hostage situation of the late 1970's, and that was no more evident than what movie-goers watched in the theaters. Four of the top five films were comedies...

Average movie ticket cost in 1980? A staggering $2.69!Collapse )

The new decade began...and these 3 songs dominated the airwaves in 1980!

For six weeks, "Call Me" by Blondie AND "Lady" by Kenny Rogers each held the top slot on the Billboard Top 40!

"Call Me" was used in the movie, "American Gigolo", starring Richard Gere, and the song really set the tone of the movie. It was the biggest selling single of the year!

"Lady" was a crossover smash for Kenny Rogers, who was primarily known as a country singer, and it was a hit for songwriter Lionel Ritchie, his first success outside of the R&B group, The Commodores.

"(Just Like) Starting Over" by John Lennon held the number one spot for 5 weeks and closed out the year, going number one on December 27. Sadly, Lennon did not enjoy the song's ultimate success, as he was slain by Mark David Chapman on December 8.

Here's the songs! I hope you listen and enjoy!

Anyone have other fave songs for 1980?

Fridays were a big night for the satyr icon and myself...we would brush up on our music by watching Friday Night Videos. A more obscure video show was "Night Tracks" hosted by Carlos DeJesus.

What videos do you remember from back in the day???
